NGC 4372

NGC 4372 is an 8th magnitude globular cluster with angular size of two thirds that of the full moon. Its stars are only of 12th magnitude and fainter, because of obscuring dust which dims starlight from this region.

Globular cluster NGC 4372 was discovered by James Dunlop on April 30, 1826, and cataloged as Dunlop 67.

NGC 4372 is fairly faint (mag 7.8), round, and large (18.6'), with stars from magnitude 12 to 16. Its location, 0.7° SW of Gamma Muscae, is in a dusty area of Musca near the 'Dark Doodad' nebula. This accounts for blue-light extinction, and turns it into a visually challenging object. The bright foreground star is magnitude 6.6.
