Telescopium is an obscure, southern constellation located between Ara and Indus. The brightest stars in this constellation are about 4th magnitude.
History and MythologyTelescopium was named by Lacaille in the 18th century to honor the revolutionary invention of the telescope. It has no associated mythology.
Notable Objects
The brightest star in Telescopium is Alpha Telescopii, a blue-white star of magnitude 3.51, and at a distance of 250 light-years. NGC 6584 is a 9th magnitude globular cluster about 50,000 light-years away. IC 4699 is a small, faint planetary nebula which appears as a smooth disk.
