NGC 7479

NGC 7479 is a barred spiral galaxy in Pegasus.

Discovered by William Herschel in 1784, NGC 7479 was described by Dreyer in th New Genreal Catalog of 1888 as "pretty Bright, considerable Large, much Extended, between 2 stars." NGC 7479 is a type SBc barred spiral with a visual magnitude of 11.0 and an apparent diameter of 4.1'. It is elongated with a prominent bar and a bright center. Faint arms can be seen arcing outward from the ends of the bar.

NGC 7479 is about 105 million light-years away. Supernova SN 1990U occurred in NGC 7479. NGC 7479 is also recognized as a Seyfert galaxy undergoing starburst activity in the nucleus and the outer arms. Polarization studies of this galaxy indicate that it recently underwent a minor merger. It is unique in the radio continuum with arms opening in an opposite direction to the optical arms.
