Instructions

When you first open the application a message appears asking if you will allow the app to use your current location. By choosing "allow" the app will use your current location to pull up pertinent earthquake information for your location. Note: this is based upon the information that your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch send to the app. At any time you may change this location from within the app's Settings.

The application, when first launched, will attempt to connect to the internet, Please note that an internet connection is required for this application to work. The opening screen is shows the list of earthquakes. From here you can navigate to any of the available screens accessed by the tabs at the bottom of the screen.

The main tabs within the app are colored in Blue below for quick reference. Instructions and options for each one are listed within each tab section.

LIST - This is a list of all the earthquakes based on your current "Filter" settings. This list can be sorted by Magnitude ("Mag"), Location, or Date by tapping on the appropriate column heading. For instance, if you click on the Magnitude column heading then all the earthquakes will be sorted from largest to smallest. Clicking again on the same header will reverse the order. Each column heading functions the same.

Note: at the top of the page it shows how many earthquakes meet your current filter criteria. For example, in Settings if you have chosen

the number shown in the bar at the top will indicate the total number of earthquakes over 5.0 in the past week around the world (All).

To obtain details of a particular earthquake within the list, click on the desired earthquake. A new screen will pop up. This is the "Earthquake Detail Screen” as described next.

Earthquake Detail Screen

This screen provides detailed information about the individual earthquake chosen. You can fully navigate around this map like all the others. (For more details on navigating around the map see the section below on the MAP tab.) The red pin indicates the exact location of the earthquake. Real-time Twitter integration is also shown on this map (based on availability). Note: it will show the last 25 Tweets mentioning the earthquake within a 250 mile radius of the earthquake that you have selected. Simply tap the twitter icon on the map to see the details of that particular Tweet and to exit tap the Dismiss button.

Tweets - This button at the bottom of the screen lets you toggle the display of the map's Tweets on and off. When highlighted (dark gray) it shows the available Tweets on the map and when tapped to light gray they will not be shown.

Detail - When you click on this button, you will be directed to the USGS website for more information. From here you can navigate as you would any other web page. Navigation keys for "refresh", "back", and "forward" appear at the bottom of the screen. At the top there is a "Done" button to return you back to the app at any time. There is a wealth of additional information that can be accessed via this official webpage such as more specialized maps (Seismic Hazard, Historical, etc.), scientific & technical information, and more earthquake details. Be sure to check out the various tab options.

Share: The last button on the bottom right of the screen is for the sharing options. When tapped, a new menu will pop up allowing you to share the earthquake details with the following services: email, Twitter, and Facebook. Click on the respective button and follow the instructions for each one. Note: for Facebook and Twitter there will be a one time set up process the first time you access it.

MAP - The map will display a purple pin with your current or chosen location. It will also show all the earthquakes within a set distance, magnitude, and timeframe (based on your chosen "Filter" options in the Settings tab).

The earthquake pins present on the map vary with respect to timeframe and magnitude. Timeframe is represented with a color code, while magnitude is indicated by the size of the pin. See the key below:

Note: within any of the maps, you can move around by swiping your finger as you would any picture on the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. For instance,

By clicking on any of the earthquake pins, a small popup box appears with basic information on the earthquake. If you press the arrow within this box, a new screen appears with all of the detail surrounding the earthquake plus additional actions you can take. This is the same "Earthquake Detail Screen" as described in the above LIST section.

Refresh - In the main map, you can refresh the data at any time by clicking the icon at the top left hand part of the screen. This will update all the data within the app including the LIST to the latest available information.

TSUNAMI - This tab brings you to NOAA's National Weather Service and provides the latest tsunami information. You can refresh the page at any time by clicking the icon at the top left hand part of the screen. If you navigate within the site, there are navigation tabs that appear at the top right hand part of the screen that will allow you to move backwards or forward.

SETTINGS - This is an important tab that allows you to change many filters and settings within the app. The options are listed below.

FILTERS - This allows you to filter the results you will see within the app. Note: It does not affect push notifications which are customized further down in the Settings menu.

LOCATION - When you click on this option, a new screen will appear allowing you to modify the current referenced location. From here you can choose to use your current location ("My location"), "Search" for a location, or use your "Address book" to select a location.

Click "Settings" in the top left of the page after making your selection and you will be returned to the Settings screen. The Map and List views will now reflect the new reference/default location.

REPORTING AGENCIES - We pull in a variety of different data sources. Some may or may not be of interest to you. To make any changes, click on this option and it will take you to a screen where you can select either On or Off for each reporting agency listed. Select the "Settings" button to return to the Settings menu. Note: We can dynamically add additional reporting agencies from our server so please let us know if you would like us to add a new one. We'll do everything we can to accommodate you.

USE METRIC - This lets you toggle metric settings on or off.

ALWAYS FILTER DUPLICATES - We pull data from a variety of different reporting agencies around the world. Sometimes this results in duplicate reports of the same earthquake. By choosing “On”, this will eliminate these duplicate records by activating an algorithm we use to filter them out.

PUSH NOTIFICATIONS - This is the long awaited feature added. You can now customize when you would like to receive notifications as well as for what magnitude.

Only send me earthquakes larger than: Choose 5.0+, 6.0+ or 7.0+. For example, the default is set to 6.0+. This means you will only receive notifications for earthquakes above the magnitude of 6.0. Note: the chosen magnitude is highlighted the darkest.

Quiet Time: If "ON" is chosen, this allows you to set a timeframe when you will NOT receive push notifications (regardless of the magnitude). By default, the quiet time is set for 10:00 pm (shown in military time 22:00) to 8:00 am. This can be changed by simply tapping the arrow at the right of the time. A popup wheel will appear to let you choose the time. When finished, hit the "Done" button.

*** If you always want to receive notifications regardless of the time of day, select "OFF".

SHARING - This allows you to logout of your Facebook and/or Twitter account. Note: this is only applicable if you had logged in while sharing an item in the past. If you choose to logout, the next time you share an item via Facebook or Twitter you will need to re-authenticate again.
