FAQ

How to use iDownload?

iDownload was created to allow you to download files using iOS devices taking advantage of wifi spots or using the cellular network. Wich means you can use it on any wifi spot dispensing the current need to have a laptop for this or thru the iOS devices internets if your computer has no internet connection.

You can use iDownload like a normal browser and when you click a download link it should pop up an alert asking if you want to download or save the link.

After downloading you can share your files to any computer or mobile device as long as it is connected to the same wifi network.

To transfer files from an iOS device to a computer ( and vice versa) you use the built in web server on iDownload:

you need to connect it to the same wifi network your computer is. Turn on enable sharing in iDownload and put the address (http://ip:port) in your computer web browser. You should imediatly see iDownload web page with your device contents.

It is possible to see Flash/videos WMV?

Adobe flash is not supported on iOS devices.

Why iDownload is so slow on viewing PDF files?

We are working on a improved file viewer engine that should bring increased compatibility with more files.

However we always stated that iDownload main function is to download files AND allow you to share them to other devices. It was never intended to be a file viewer or media player the feature itself was added later due to users request.

Why can't i see MP4?

iDownload uses the standard iOS media frameworks as such it should be able to play any file that the iOS media player is able to. We confirmed it plays a recoded dvd with handbrake to .m4v.

However the .m4v file format allows some different encodings, some supported, others unsupported.

The best way for you to make sure the video you download is indeed supported is: try to use mobile safari to get the video and see if it triggers media player and if it plays the video and / or send it to your desktop send it back to your device thru iTunes and check if the iPod app is able to play it.

Some users suggested to change the mp4 extension to m4v to be able to view files, can you try to see if it works with your video?

Why is not possible to save my download files on my music/video library?

iDownload keeps the files you download (or upload from other device) on the device filesystem equivalent to a folder inside iDownload app.

Unfortunately due to iOS system nature the files are not available to other apps, we hope this policy changes sometime.

The more we think about it the more we feel that this policy of having files locked inside the apps is not optimal at all. In our opinion the files should be saved in central user location where you could access your files from any app (for example, audio and video files should be able to be saved with the rest of the audio and video files on the iOS devices), file management and file viewing should be managed by the system itself, not implemented by each dev (usually in different way for each).

Some links are not working:

We are aware our mini browser is limited when compared to mobile safari, but this is because sdk has no access to several of the private frameworks used to implement the full browser functionality.

We have been researching a "links only" kind of browser mode, where you have the option to just see all the links that are present on a page when everything else fails.

Rapidshare:

We had some reports that rapidshare premium accounts do work with iDownload.

We already contact rapidshare tech support to try to fix the problem but rapidshare did not seem to care too much that some of their users could want to download files using their iOS devices...

So we are still looking to find what is possible to do on our side but cannot promise much without some support from themselves.

We have been asking our users to contact rapidshare support and ask them to support iDownload and iOS devices downloads.

Open tabs or windows:

The tab issue was supposedlly fixed in most websites, instead of opening new window / tab they should open like hotmail link (in same window).

Can i have bookmarks on iDownload?

The Links section on iDownload works as bookmarks.

Can I download files directly from safari?

iDownload has its own web browser that you can use to navigate to your desired files, we also provide a usefull bookmarklet ("Open in iDownload") that you can add to your safari bookmarks allowing you to quickly open any webpage you are browsing on iDownload.

Another option is to use copy paste; remember that in safari you can hold on any link, even one that you intend to donwload; after copying it switch to iDownload and paste it on the browser address bar.

What files can iDownload download?

There is no limitation to file types that iDownload is able to download, at the most you might stumble on some incompatible website.

Is there any limit for downloads?

Regarding limits we will never implement any of them unless we are forced by superior forces.

Why does it not have every "Flash Drive" feature?

iDownload does not try to compete with any "flash drive" app, its main task is just to download files and allow access to them from other devices for transfer.

Web pages that require user and pass:

If the page you are trying to access requires user / pass authorization you can try to use the url in format: http://user:pass@www.website.com

We have been trying to properly implement user authentication.

Dimm screen:

iDownload respects your users settings, it will dimm after the specified time with no interaction, but it should keep working / downloading.

It is possible the transfer of large files from a pc or mac to an iOS device?

We have tested with very large files with no aparent problems. However, please remember that the iOS devices might not have enough space (or it is spreaded across disk). Check if you have available space on the device.

Does iDownload uses an FTP server?

iDownload does not use a ftp server, we use a simple web server to allow for no dependency on client apps, you just need to use a webrowser.

It is possible to connect an iOS device to the computer and the app comes up as an memory stick being able to drag the songs/videos?

We are always trying to improve all aspects of iDownload, however we tried to use the simplest and broader technology for improved compatibility with most devices, including other iOS devices, where what you ask is just not possible at all.

However with the use of bonjour network you can obtain almost the same behavior but on your web browser ;)

Background audio support allows audio to keep playing after exiting iDownload (for ex: while using other applications).
